Title: Exploring Prefixes

Objective: Students will understand the concept of prefixes and be able to identify and use common prefixes in words.

Materials: - Whiteboard or chart paper - Markers - Index cards or small pieces of paper - Pencils or pens

Introduction: 1. Begin the lesson by asking students if they know what a prefix is. Allow a few students to share their ideas. 2. Explain that a prefix is a word part that is added to the beginning of a base word to change its meaning. 3. Write the word “unhappy” on the board and ask students to identify the base word and the prefix. Discuss how the prefix “un-“ changes the meaning of the word.

Activity 1: Prefix Match-Up 1. Divide the class into pairs or small groups. 2. Give each group a set of index cards or small pieces of paper. 3. On one set of cards, write base words (e.g., happy, like, do, help). 4. On another set of cards, write common prefixes (e.g., un-, re-, dis-, pre-). 5. Instruct students to match the correct prefix with the corresponding base word and place them together. 6. After a few minutes, have each group share their matches with the class. Discuss any disagreements or questions.

Activity 2: Create New Words 1. Explain that prefixes can be added to base words to create new words with different meanings. 2. Write a few base words on the board (e.g., cook, pack, read). 3. Ask students to brainstorm and write down as many words as they can by adding different prefixes to the base words. 4. After a few minutes, have students share their words with the class. Write their suggestions on the board. 5. Discuss the meanings of the new words and how the prefixes change the original word’s meaning.

Activity 3: Prefix Detective 1. Give each student a piece of paper and a pencil or pen. 2. Instruct students to find a book or article and identify at least five words with prefixes. 3. Students should write down the word, its meaning, and the prefix used. 4. After they have completed their detective work, have students share their findings with a partner or the whole class.

Conclusion: 1. Review the concept of prefixes and their role in changing the meaning of words. 2. Ask students to share any new words they learned or interesting findings from the Prefix Detective activity. 3. Encourage students to continue exploring prefixes in their reading and writing.

Extension: - Have students create flashcards with base words and prefixes. They can quiz each other or play a matching game. - Challenge students to write sentences using words with prefixes to demonstrate their understanding of how prefixes change the meaning of words.
