Procedure:

Introduction (10 minutes):

• Begin the lesson by asking students if they have ever heard of British Standards and what they think they are.
• Explain that British Standards are a set of guidelines and specifications that ensure products and services are safe, reliable, and of good quality.
• Tell students that in engineering, it is important to follow standards to ensure that structures are safe and can withstand the forces they will be subjected to.

Design of Beams (60 minutes):

• Explain to students that they will be designing a steel beam using British Standards.
• Show them the design charts and tables for steel beams and explain how to use them.
• Give them a scenario where they need to design a beam for a specific load and span.
• Have students work in pairs to design the beam using the charts and tables.
• Walk around the room to answer any questions and provide guidance.

Discussion (30 minutes):

• Once students have completed their designs, bring the class together for a discussion.
• Ask students to share their designs and explain how they arrived at their calculations.
• Discuss the importance of following standards in engineering and how they ensure safety and reliability.
