  1. Have students choose a short story or article from the library, and then explain the author’s purpose for writing the story or article.

  2. Discuss different types of writing and how each has a different purpose (informative texts, persuasive texts, narrative texts).

  3. After reading the text, ask the students to identify the author’s purpose. Have them come up with evidence to support their claim as to why they believe the author wrote the text.

  4. Have the class come up with a chart or pie graph to represent the different types of author’s purposes they have read.

  5. Discuss the importance of understanding author’s purpose and how it helps to interpret the text.
