Title: “BIDMAS Fraction Frenzy”
Objective: To reinforce understanding of BIDMAS (Brackets, Indices, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction) while incorporating fractions in a fun warm-up game.
Materials needed: - Whiteboard or large paper - Marker or pen - Stopwatch or timer
Instructions: 1. Divide the class into pairs or allow students to work individually. 2. Explain the rules of the game: The goal is to solve as many BIDMAS problems correctly within the given time limit. 3. Draw a large BIDMAS acronym on the whiteboard or paper, emphasizing the order of operations. 4. Set a timer for 5 to 10 minutes, depending on the available time. 5. Provide a list of BIDMAS problems involving fractions and brackets on the whiteboard or paper. Here are some examples: a) (1/2 + 1/4) x 3/4 b) 2/3 x (1/2 + 1/3) c) 3/4 - (1/2 x 1/4) d) (2/3 + 1/4) - 1/2 e) 1/2 x (3/4 - 1/3) f) (1/4 + 1/3) x 2/5 g) 3/4 - (1/2 + 1/4) h) (2/3 - 1/4) + 1/2 i) 1/2 x (3/4 + 1/3) j) (1/4 - 1/3) x 2/5 6. Instruct the students to solve the problems mentally or on a piece of paper within the given time limit. 7. Encourage students to use the BIDMAS order of operations correctly, solving the brackets first, then any indices, followed by division, multiplication, addition, and subtraction. 8. After the time is up, ask the students to stop solving and put their pens down. 9. Go through each problem one by one, asking for volunteers to share their answers and explain their thought process. 10. Discuss any misconceptions or common errors that arise during the discussion. 11. Congratulate the students on their efforts and reinforce the importance of practicing BIDMAS correctly.
Variations: - Increase the difficulty level by including more complex fractions or multiple brackets in the problems. - Turn the game into a competition by awarding points for correct answers. The student or pair with the most points wins. - Allow students to create their own BIDMAS problems involving fractions and brackets for their peers to solve.
