Here is a boardwork activity on adding numbers including peso money with or without regrouping for grade 1:
- Draw a large grid on the board with three columns labeled “Number 1,” “Number 2,” and “Sum.”
- Write a series of addition problems in the first two columns, including peso money amounts. For example:
- 25 pesos + 10 pesos
- 15 pesos + 8 pesos
- 30 pesos + 12 pesos
- 18 pesos + 7 pesos
- 22 pesos + 9 pesos
- 35 pesos + 14 pesos
- 27 pesos + 11 pesos
- 20 pesos + 6 pesos
- 33 pesos + 13 pesos
- 16 pesos + 5 pesos
- Start with the first problem and ask a student to come up and solve it on the board. Encourage them to use regrouping if necessary.
- Once the student has solved the problem, write the answer in the “Sum” column.
- Repeat this process for each problem, allowing different students to come up and solve them.
- After all the problems have been solved, review the answers with the class and discuss any regrouping that was needed.
- To make the activity more interactive, you can also use play money or manipulatives to represent the peso amounts. This will help students visualize the addition process.
- Encourage students to explain their thinking and strategies as they solve each problem, promoting mathematical discourse in the classroom.
Remember to adjust the difficulty level of the problems based on the abilities of your grade 1 students. You can also gradually increase the complexity of the problems as the students become more comfortable with adding peso money amounts.
