The Inuit people, who live in the Arctic regions, are good examples of staying calm. They believe it is not good to show annoyance or get angry and shout. A science journalist visited the Arctic and noticed that Inuit parents never shout at small children. Instead, they use stories and role play to help children learn how to handle their emotions. Children learn patience and empathy by resolving disagreements and managing anger. This is important in communities where working together is valued. In contrast, in societies where competition is seen as necessary for success, expressing emotions is more accepted. Professor Frances Jenson, a neurology expert, explains that children and teenagers are more likely to feel strong emotions as their brains develop. She advises parents to stay calm and not react emotionally to their teenage children’s outbursts.
