Richard Turere is a herder from Kenya. He takes care of his family’s animals, like cows, goats, and sheep. They live near Nairobi National Park, which has rhinos, giraffes, zebras, buffalo, and lions. The lions used to come at night and eat the family’s cattle while they were sleeping. When Richard was 11, he had an idea to keep the lions away. He noticed that the lions were scared of moving light. Since lions are naturally afraid of people, Richard realized that they associated the moving light with people and stayed away. He set up flashing lights to make it seem like people were walking around the area where the animals were kept. The lions stopped coming near. Other farmers nearby started using his “lion lights” too. Before, many lions were killed by farmers trying to protect their animals. But now, the lion lights have helped both the farmers and the lions. They have been installed in 750 farms in the local community. Richard’s invention has made him famous. Farmers now use it to protect their animals from predators like cheetahs, leopards, and lions. The lights also protect their crops from elephants. All of these animals are in danger of disappearing. According to the Kenyan Wildlife Service, there are only about 1,700 lions left in the wild in Kenya. Now, the farmers can live peacefully with the lions.
