Title: Exploring Climate Fiction (Cli-Fi) in Year 11 English

Objective: Students will be able to analyze and evaluate the themes and messages in climate fiction (Cli-Fi) texts, and develop their own Cli-Fi short story.

Materials: - Cli-Fi short stories or novels (e.g. The Water Will Come by Jeff Goodell, The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi, The Year of the Flood by Margaret Atwood) - Writing prompts for Cli-Fi short story - Graphic organizer for analyzing Cli-Fi texts - Rubric for Cli-Fi short story

Procedure:

  1. Introduction (10 minutes) - Begin by asking students if they have heard of Cli-Fi before. Explain that Cli-Fi is a genre of fiction that explores the impact of climate change on society and the environment. - Show examples of Cli-Fi short stories or novels and ask students to share their initial thoughts and reactions.

  2. Analyzing Cli-Fi Texts (30 minutes) - Provide students with a graphic organizer to analyze Cli-Fi texts. The organizer should include sections for plot, characters, setting, themes, and messages. - Have students work in pairs or small groups to analyze a Cli-Fi short story or novel. Encourage them to discuss and debate their interpretations of the text. - After analyzing the text, have students share their findings with the class.

  3. Writing Cli-Fi Short Stories (50 minutes) - Provide students with a writing prompt for a Cli-Fi short story. The prompt should ask them to imagine a future world affected by climate change and to create a story that explores the impact on society and the environment. - Allow students time to brainstorm and plan their stories. - Have students share their stories with the class and provide feedback to each other.

  4. Reflection and Evaluation (10 minutes) - Ask students to reflect on what they have learned about Cli-Fi and how it relates to their own lives and the world around them. - Use a rubric to evaluate the students’ Cli-Fi short stories based on creativity, originality, and the ability to effectively convey a message about climate change.

Extension: - Have students research and present on a current issue related to climate change, such as rising sea levels or deforestation. - Encourage students to read more Cli-Fi texts and write a book review or analysis.
