Title: Exploring the Parts of Plants
Grade Level: 1st Grade
Objective: - Students will be able to identify and describe the different parts of a plant. - Students will understand the functions of each plant part. - Students will be able to differentiate between the various parts of a plant.
Materials: - Picture cards of different plants (flower, tree, grass, etc.) - Real plant specimens (leaves, flowers, stems, roots) - Chart paper and markers - Whiteboard and markers - Construction paper - Glue sticks - Scissors - Plant coloring sheets - Plant worksheets (optional)
Procedure:
- Introduction (5 minutes):
- Begin the lesson by asking students if they know what plants are and what they need to grow.
- Discuss the importance of plants in our lives (e.g., providing oxygen, food, shelter).
- Show picture cards of different plants and ask students to identify them.
- Whole Group Discussion (10 minutes):
- Display a large chart paper and draw a simple plant with roots, stem, leaves, and flowers.
- Ask students to name the different parts of the plant.
- Write down their responses on the chart paper.
- Explain the function of each part (roots absorb water and nutrients, stem supports the plant, leaves make food through photosynthesis, flowers attract pollinators).
- Hands-on Exploration (15 minutes):
- Distribute real plant specimens (leaves, flowers, stems, roots) to small groups of students.
- Encourage students to observe and touch the different parts of the plants.
- Ask them to describe the texture, color, and shape of each part.
- Have students share their observations with the whole group.
- Art Activity (10 minutes):
- Provide each student with construction paper, glue sticks, and scissors.
- Instruct students to create a collage of a plant using the different plant parts they observed.
