Lesson 1: Simple Prayers to Thank God for His Provision

Objective: To teach grade 1 learners simple prayers to thank God for His provision.

Materials: Bible, pictures of food, paper, crayons

Introduction: Begin by asking the learners if they know what provision means. Explain that provision is when God gives us what we need, like food, water, and shelter. Show them pictures of food and ask them if they are thankful for the food they have.

Body:

  1. Read Psalm 136:1-3 from the Bible. Explain that this is a prayer of thanksgiving to God for His provision.

  2. Ask the learners to think of things they are thankful for, like food, clothes, toys, and family. Write these things on the paper.

  3. Help the learners create a simple prayer of thanksgiving using the things they are thankful for. For example, “Thank you God for my food, my clothes, and my family. Amen.”

  4. Have the learners draw a picture of something they are thankful for and write their prayer on the paper.

Conclusion: Encourage the learners to say their prayer of thanksgiving every day before they eat or go to bed.

Lesson 2: Prayer as a Way of Communicating with God

Objective: To teach grade 1 learners that prayer is a way of communicating with God.

Materials: Bible, paper, crayons

Introduction: Begin by asking the learners if they know what communication means. Explain that communication is when we talk to someone or share our thoughts and feelings with them. Ask them if they know who we can communicate with besides people.

Body:

  1. Read Matthew 6:9-13 from the Bible. Explain that this is the Lord’s Prayer, which Jesus taught us to pray.

  2. Ask the learners to think of things they want to say to God, like thank you, sorry, or help me. Write these things on the paper.

  3. Help the learners create a simple prayer using the things they want to say to God. For example, “Dear God, thank you for my family. I’m sorry for being mean to my sister. Please help me be kind. Amen.”

  4. Have the learners draw a picture of themselves praying and write their prayer on the paper.

Conclusion: Encourage the learners to talk to God every day, just like they talk to their family and friends. Remind them that God loves to hear from them and is always listening.
