Week 1: Introduction to The Happiness Trap: Introduce the book and its concept of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Explain how the book will help 10 year olds become more mindful, better able to handle difficult feelings, and more capable of setting and achieving self-directed goals.
Week 2: The Concept of Values: Skinners ‘ABC’ framework for values, and why it is important to identify our deepest values.
Week 3: The Reality Gap: Explain the daily struggle between the thought and feelings in our heads and our real life experiences.
Week 4: The Three C’s: Experiment with how the principles of cognitive defusion, mindfulness and values-based action can be used to help manage stress and anxiety.
Week 5: Making Peace with Pain: Understanding the role and nature of pain, and developing strategies to accept it and still be able to take action.
Week 6: The Observing Self: Explore how to create a open, compassionate and non-judgmental relationship with ourselves by developing an observing self.
Week 7: Living by Your Values: Applying the concept of values to our choices and behavior, and discussing the consequences and implications of each choice.
Week 8: Living in the Now: Exploring how to be present and in touch with our moment-to-moment experience through mindfulness exercises such as mindful walking and mindful eating.
Week 9: Living with Uncertainty: Learning to let go of expectations and to embrace uncertainty as a way to live more fully and authentically in the here and now.
Week 10: Reflection & Integration: Reflecting on the journey over the last 10 weeks, and integrating all that they have learned in order to continue to live as self-directed, mindful individuals.
