Materials Needed: Internet access, white board, markers

Objective: Students will be able to explain to others what James Lind did and the importance of his work in understanding how to treat illnesses with diet.

Hook: Begin the lesson by asking students what they know about staying healthy. Ask them questions about what diet and exercise they like to do to keep them healthy. Ask students if there are particular foods that they think make them healthy.

Introduction: Introduce students to James Lind, explain that he was an 18th century Scottish physician who was one of the first people to suggest that illnesses could be treated by manipulating diet.

Group Activities:

1) Ask the students to split into groups and discuss what kind of things they think people ate in the 18th century compared to what they eat today. Ask them to write down some ideas and then present back to the class.

2) Ask the students to research James Lind and his work and then discuss it as a group. Ask the groups to come up with one or two questions to ask the rest of the class.

Discussion: After the groups have discussed and researched, open up a discussion about what the students learnt. Ask each group to answer the questions from their group. Ask them to explain the importance of James Lind’s work in understanding how to treat illnesses with diet.

Conclusion: Summarize the main points and explain to the students why James Lind’s work is still relevant today. Make sure to explain the importance of eating a balanced diet and doing regular exercise.

Assessment: Ask the students to write a short essay summarizing what they have learnt about James Lind and explain why his work is important today.
