Objectives

• Students will identify and measure different sources of atmospheric acidification • Students will understand the implications of atmospheric acidification on global climate change • Students will create a research-based project that shows the impact of atmospheric acidification on global climate change

Materials

• Computer with Internet access • Textbooks or research sources • Research materials such as paper, pencils, and blank poster boards

Activity

  1. Begin the activity by introducing the concept of atmospheric acidification. Explain that it is an increase in the amount of acid in the atmosphere, which can have a significant impact on global climate change. Ask the students to brainstorm some potential sources of atmospheric acidification and write their answers on the board (e.g. vehicles, factories, deforestation).

  2. Split the class into groups of three or four and give each group a research question related to atmospheric acidification (e.g. “What is the impact of atmospheric acidification on global climate change?”). Instruct the groups to use their textbooks, any available research sources, and the Internet to gather information related to their question. Give the groups 15 minutes to research their question.

  3. Once the groups have finished their research, ask them to brainstorm how they can present their findings in an interesting way. Give each group a blank poster board and ask them to make a poster that includes a breakdown of their research question and findings.

  4. Invite each group to present their poster to the class. As each group presents, have the other students take notes about their findings.

  5. After all of the groups have presented, have the students discuss what they have learned about the impact of atmospheric acidification on global climate change. How could people and communities around the world reduce the amount of atmospheric acidification?

  6. Wrap up the activity by debriefing with the class. Discuss what was learned and encourage the students to continue researching and discussing the topic in the future.
