Title: Ethical Dilemmas: Balancing Business and the Environment

Objective: To engage pupils in active learning by exploring the impacts of ethics on both business and the environment, fostering critical thinking and decision-making skills.

Materials needed: 1. Whiteboard or flipchart 2. Markers 3. Sticky notes 4. Handout with ethical scenarios (see below)

Task Instructions: 1. Begin by briefly discussing the importance of ethics in business and the environment. Explain that ethical decisions can have significant impacts on both these areas. 2. Divide the pupils into small groups of 3-4. 3. Distribute the handout with ethical scenarios to each group. 4. Instruct the groups to read and discuss the scenarios, considering the ethical implications for both the business and the environment. 5. Each group should then choose one scenario to present to the class. 6. Give the groups 3-4 minutes to prepare a short presentation (1-2 minutes) on their chosen scenario, focusing on the ethical dilemmas and the potential impacts on both the business and the environment. 7. After the preparation time, ask each group to present their scenario and discuss their analysis with the class. 8. Encourage the class to actively participate by asking questions and sharing their thoughts on the ethical dilemmas presented. 9. As a facilitator, guide the discussion by asking probing questions to deepen the pupils’ understanding of the impacts of ethics on business and the environment. 10. Conclude the activity by summarizing the key points discussed and emphasizing the importance of ethical decision-making in achieving a sustainable balance between business and the environment.

Ethical Scenarios (choose 3-4 for the handout): 1. A manufacturing company is considering dumping its waste into a nearby river to save costs. Discuss the ethical implications for the business and the environment. 2. A clothing brand is aware that its suppliers use child labor in developing countries. Should the company continue sourcing from these suppliers? Analyze the ethical consequences for the business and the environment. 3. A fast-food chain is considering using genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in its products to increase production and reduce costs. Examine the ethical dilemmas for the business and the environment. 4. An energy company is planning to build a new power plant that will emit significant amounts of greenhouse gases. Explore the ethical considerations for the business and the environment.

Note: The scenarios can be adjusted or replaced with real-life examples relevant to the pupils’ context to enhance engagement and relevance.
