Procedure:

  1. Engage (10 minutes):
    • Begin the lesson by asking the students if they know what a verb is. Write the word “verb” on the chart paper and elicit responses from the students.
    • Explain that a verb is a word that shows action or a state of being. Give examples of verbs such as run, jump, eat, and sleep.
    • Introduce the verb ‘to do’ and explain that it is used to talk about actions. Write ‘to do’ on the chart paper and ask the students if they know any present tense forms of this verb.
  2. Explore (15 minutes):
    • Show the flashcards with the present tense forms of ‘to do’ (do, does) to the students.
    • Explain that ‘do’ is used with pronouns like ‘I’, ‘you’, ‘we’, and ‘they’, while ‘does’ is used with pronouns like ‘he’, ‘she’, and ‘it’.
    • Practice saying the present tense forms of ‘to do’ together as a class, emphasizing the correct pronunciation.
    • Divide the students into pairs and give each pair a set of sentence strips.
    • Instruct the students to match the correct present tense form of ‘to do’ (do or does) with the pronouns on the sentence strips. Encourage them to read the sentences aloud to each other.
  3. Explain (10 minutes):
    • Gather the students back together as a whole class.
    • Write a few sentences on the whiteboard with missing present tense forms of ‘to do’. For example: “She __ her homework every day.” and “We __ our chores on weekends.”
    • Ask the students to fill in the blanks with the correct present tense form of ‘to do’ (does, do).
    • Discuss the correct answers as a class, emphasizing the use of ‘does’ with singular pronouns and ‘do’ with plural pronouns.
  4. Elaborate (10 minutes):
    • Distribute worksheets with sentences to complete to each student.
    • Instruct the students to read the sentences and fill in the blanks with the correct present tense form of ‘to do’ (do or does).
    • Circulate around the classroom to provide assistance and check for understanding.
  5. Evaluate (5 minutes):
    • Collect the completed worksheets from the students.
    • Review the worksheets to assess the students’ understanding of using the present tense forms of ‘to do’ accurately.
