Grade: 9

Subject: Photosynthesis

Goal: Students will be able to explain the basic steps of photosynthesis

New York State Next Generation Standards: S4L3.a: Describe the properties of photosynthesis and respiration.

Materials: Worksheet, markers/crayons, paper

Lesson:

I. Introduction (5 minutes) A. Introduce photosynthesis as the process all plants use to turn sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide into energy and oxygen.

B. Introduce the state standards, referencing the local and global effects of photosynthesis.

II. Mini-lesson (15 minutes) A. Diagram the equation of photosynthesis on the board and explain how the process works beginning with the absorption of sunlight by chloroplasts.

B. Discuss the role of water in photosynthesis and explain the release of oxygen into the atmosphere as a result.

III. Task (15 minutes) A. Have students draw and label a diagram of photosynthesis that includes the role of water and the release of oxygen into the atmosphere.

B. Have students share their diagram with a partner and discuss the process of photosynthesis.

IV. Assessment (5 minutes) A. Ask a series of questions about the process of photosynthesis and have the students answer.

B. Ask the students to explain the properties of photosynthesis and respiration, as per the New York State standards.

C.Have the students evaluate their own diagram and compare it with their partner’s to identify strengths and areas for improvement.
