Activity: “Celebrating Diversity in Our School Community”

Desired Outcome: I recognise that each individual has a unique blend of abilities and needs. I contribute to making my school community one which values individuals equally and is a welcoming place for all.

Curriculum Area: Health and Wellbeing

Curriculum Level: Second Level

Focus: Mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing

Introduction:

In this activity, we will explore the concept of diversity and how it contributes to our school community’s wellbeing. We will learn about the different abilities and needs that individuals have and how we can create a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone.

Activity:

  1. Brainstorming: Begin by asking the students to brainstorm different ways in which people can be diverse. Write their ideas on the board. Encourage them to think beyond the obvious differences such as race and gender and consider other factors such as abilities, interests, and personalities.

  2. Group Discussion: Divide the class into small groups and ask them to discuss the following questions:

  • How does diversity contribute to our school community’s wellbeing?
  • What are some challenges that individuals with different abilities and needs may face in our school community?
  • How can we create a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone?
  1. Presentation: Ask each group to present their ideas to the class. Encourage them to share their personal experiences and examples of how they have seen diversity celebrated in our school community.

  2. Reflection: Ask the students to reflect on what they have learned and how they can contribute to making our school community more welcoming and inclusive. Encourage them to think about small actions they can take, such as being kind to others, listening to different perspectives, and celebrating differences.

Conclusion:

In this activity, we have learned about the importance of diversity in our school community’s wellbeing. We have explored different ways in which people can be diverse and how we can create a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone. By celebrating diversity, we can contribute to making our school community a better place for all.
