Activity: Exploring Gaelic Words and Phrases through Writing

Desired Outcome: I have explored and experimented with Gaelic words and phrases.

Suitable for: Early Level (Scottish Curriculum)

Focus: Ethos and Values

Materials needed: 1. Paper 2. Pencils or crayons 3. Gaelic word and phrase cards (prepared in advance) 4. Gaelic-English dictionary (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Introduction (5 minutes):
    • Gather the students in a circle and explain that today they will be exploring and experimenting with Gaelic words and phrases.
    • Discuss the importance of respecting and valuing different languages and cultures, emphasizing the ethos of inclusivity and diversity.
  2. Vocabulary Introduction (10 minutes):
    • Show the students Gaelic word and phrase cards one by one, pronouncing each word or phrase and explaining its meaning in English.
    • Encourage the students to repeat the words and phrases after you, focusing on correct pronunciation.
    • Use simple and common words and phrases suitable for Early Level, such as greetings, colors, numbers, and basic phrases like “thank you” and “please.”
  3. Writing Activity (15 minutes):
    • Distribute paper and pencils or crayons to each student.
    • Ask the students to choose one Gaelic word or phrase they have learned and write it at the top of their paper.
    • Encourage the students to draw a picture that represents the meaning of the word or phrase they have chosen.
    • For example, if a student chooses the Gaelic word for “cat,” they can draw a picture of a cat.
    • Assist the students in writing the chosen word or phrase below their drawing, using the Gaelic-English dictionary if needed.
  4. Sharing and Discussion (10 minutes):
    • Invite the students to share their drawings and explain the meaning of the word or phrase they have chosen.
    • Encourage the students to use the Gaelic word or phrase in a sentence, if possible.
    • Facilitate a discussion about the importance of learning and respecting different languages and cultures, highlighting the values of inclusivity and diversity.
  5. Reflection (5 minutes):
    • Ask the students to reflect on what they have learned and how they felt during the activity.
    • Discuss the importance of embracing and celebrating different languages and cultures, promoting the ethos of respect and understanding.

Extension: - For students who show a keen interest in Gaelic, provide additional resources or activities to further explore the language, such as simple Gaelic songs or rhymes. - Encourage students to use Gaelic words or phrases in their daily interactions, fostering a sense of appreciation for different languages and cultures.

Note: This activity can be adapted to explore words and phrases from other languages, depending on the cultural diversity within the classroom.
