Activity: Exploring Ancient Egypt with Nefertiti

Desired Outcome: To show my understanding, I can respond to literal, inferential and evaluative questions and other close reading tasks and can create different kinds of questions of my own.

Introduction: 1. Begin the activity by introducing the topic of Ancient Egypt and its significance in history. 2. Explain that we will be focusing on the influential figure of Nefertiti, an ancient Egyptian queen, and her impact on the society of that time. 3. Provide a brief overview of Nefertiti’s life and her role in shaping Ancient Egypt.

Activity: 1. Distribute a passage about Nefertiti and her influence on Ancient Egypt to the students. 2. Instruct the students to read the passage carefully and silently. 3. After reading, ask the students to identify and highlight any unfamiliar words or phrases in the passage. 4. Facilitate a class discussion to clarify the meaning of the highlighted words and phrases. 5. Divide the students into small groups and assign each group a set of questions to answer based on the passage. The questions should cover literal, inferential, and evaluative aspects of the text. - Literal Questions: These questions require students to recall specific information directly stated in the passage. - Inferential Questions: These questions require students to make logical deductions or draw conclusions based on the information provided in the passage. - Evaluative Questions: These questions require students to express their opinions or make judgments based on the information in the passage. 6. After the groups have discussed and answered their assigned questions, reconvene as a class and have each group share their responses. 7. Encourage students to ask their own questions about the passage, focusing on different aspects such as Nefertiti’s impact on art, religion, or politics in Ancient Egypt. 8. Allow students to take turns asking their self-generated questions to the class, promoting critical thinking and discussion.

Extension: 1. Provide additional resources, such as books or websites, for students to further explore the topic of Ancient Egypt and Nefertiti. 2. Assign a creative writing task where students imagine themselves as Nefertiti and write a diary entry or a letter describing their experiences and influence on Ancient Egypt. 3. Organize a class presentation where students can share their findings and insights about Nefertiti and her impact on Ancient Egypt.

Assessment: 1. Monitor students’ participation and engagement during the group discussions and class activities. 2. Evaluate students’ responses to the literal, inferential, and evaluative questions, assessing their understanding of the passage and their ability to analyze and interpret the information. 3. Review students’ self-generated questions to assess their ability to think critically and apply their knowledge of the topic.
