Activity: Email Writing

Desired Outcome: By considering the type of text I am creating, I can independently select ideas and relevant information for different purposes, and organise essential information or ideas and any supporting detail in a logical order. I can use suitable vocabulary to communicate effectively with my audience.

Level: Fourth Level

Introduction: In this activity, you will learn how to write an effective email. Emails are a common form of communication in today’s world, and it is important to know how to write them properly. You will learn how to select ideas and relevant information for different purposes, organise essential information or ideas and any supporting detail in a logical order, and use suitable vocabulary to communicate effectively with your audience.

Task: You are a student who wants to apply for a summer internship at a local company. Write an email to the company expressing your interest in the internship and explaining why you would be a good fit for the position.

Steps: 1. Identify the purpose of your email. What do you want to achieve by sending this email? Make a list of the key points you want to include in your email.

  1. Think about your audience. Who will be reading your email? What tone should you use? What kind of vocabulary should you use?

  2. Organise your ideas in a logical order. Start with an introduction, then explain why you are interested in the internship, and finally, explain why you would be a good fit for the position.

  3. Use suitable vocabulary to communicate effectively with your audience. Use formal language and avoid slang or informal expressions.

  4. Proofread your email for spelling and grammar errors. Make sure your email is clear and easy to understand.
