Activity Title: Colourful Number Sequences

Curriculum Area: Mathematics

Curriculum Level: First Level

Desired Outcome: Through exploring number patterns, I can recognise and continue simple number sequences and can explain the rule I have applied.

Focus: Colours

Resources Needed: Coloured pencils, paper, number cards (1-20), money (coins and notes), measuring tape

Introduction: Begin by discussing with the class the concept of number sequences. Ask them if they know what a number sequence is and if they can give any examples. Explain that a number sequence is a list of numbers that follow a pattern or rule. Tell them that in this activity, they will be exploring number sequences using colours.

Activity: 1. Colourful Number Patterns: Give each student a piece of paper and coloured pencils. Ask them to create a colourful pattern using three colours. For example, red, blue, green, red, blue, green, etc. Once they have created their pattern, ask them to write down the first five numbers in the sequence. Encourage them to explain the rule they used to create the pattern.

  1. Money Sequences: Give each student a set of coins and notes. Ask them to create a sequence using the money. For example, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1, £2, £5, etc. Once they have created their sequence, ask them to write down the first five numbers in the sequence. Encourage them to explain the rule they used to create the sequence.

  2. Measuring Sequences: Give each student a measuring tape. Ask them to create a sequence using the measurements. For example, 10cm, 20cm, 30cm, 40cm, 50cm, etc. Once they have created their sequence, ask them to write down the first five numbers in the sequence. Encourage them to explain the rule they used to create the sequence.

Conclusion: Gather the class together and ask them to share their colourful number patterns, money sequences and measuring sequences. Encourage them to explain the rule they used to create the sequence. Discuss with the class the different patterns and rules that were used. Ask them if they noticed any similarities or differences between the sequences. Finally, ask them to reflect on what they have learned about number sequences and how they can apply this knowledge in the future.
