Activity Title: “Money Sequences”

Curriculum Area: Mathematics

Curriculum Level: First Level

Desired Outcome: Through exploring number patterns, I can recognise and continue simple number sequences and can explain the rule I have applied.

Focus: Differentiation

Introduction:

In this activity, we will be exploring number patterns related to money. We will be looking at different sequences of numbers and figuring out the rule that applies to each sequence. By the end of this activity, you will be able to recognise and continue simple number sequences and explain the rule you have applied.

Instructions:

  1. Divide the class into groups of 4-5 students.

  2. Provide each group with a set of cards that have different sequences of numbers related to money. For example, the first card could have the sequence: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50.

  3. Ask the students to work together to figure out the rule that applies to the sequence. For example, the rule for the sequence above is to add 5 to the previous number to get the next number.

  4. Once the students have figured out the rule, ask them to continue the sequence for the next 5 numbers.

  5. Repeat the process with different sequences of numbers related to money. Encourage the students to use different strategies to figure out the rule, such as counting by fives or using a number line.

  6. After each sequence, ask the students to share their rule with the class and explain how they figured it out.

  7. As a class, discuss the different strategies used to figure out the rules and compare the different sequences.

Conclusion:

By exploring different sequences of numbers related to money, the students have developed their ability to recognise and continue simple number sequences and explain the rule they have applied. This activity has also encouraged differentiation by allowing students to use different strategies to figure out the rules.
