Objective: To help children understand the importance of caring for, sharing and cooperating with others through the story of Samuel hearing his name.
Activity:
-
Begin by introducing the story of Samuel hearing his name from the Bible. Explain that Samuel was a young boy who lived in a temple and one night, he heard a voice calling his name. He thought it was the priest, Eli, but it turned out to be God calling him.
-
Ask the children to sit in a circle and explain that you will be playing a game called “Pass the Blessing”. Explain that a blessing is something good that we can share with others, like a smile, a hug, or a kind word.
-
Start the game by saying “I am blessed because I have two hands” and then pass a ball or object to the child next to you. That child then says “I am blessed because I have two feet” and passes the object to the next child, and so on.
-
Encourage the children to think of blessings that they can share with others, like “I am blessed because I have a kind heart” or “I am blessed because I can make others laugh”.
-
After the game, ask the children to reflect on how it felt to share blessings with others. Did it make them feel happy? Did it make others happy?
-
Bring the story of Samuel back into the discussion and ask the children how they think Samuel felt when he heard God calling his name. Did he feel happy? Excited? Scared?
-
Explain that just like Samuel, we can all hear God calling us to do good things and share blessings with others. We can do this by being kind, caring, and cooperative with others.
-
Finish the activity by asking the children to draw a picture of themselves sharing a blessing with someone else. Encourage them to think about what they can do to make others feel happy and loved.
Desired Outcome: As the children play and learn, they will develop their understanding of what is fair and unfair and the importance of caring for, sharing and cooperating with others. They will also learn about the story of Samuel hearing his name and how we can all hear God calling us to do good things and share blessings with others.
