Activity: David and Goliath
Desired Outcome: As I play and learn, I am developing my understanding of what is fair and unfair and the importance of caring for, sharing and cooperating with others.
Introduction: Introduce the story of David and Goliath to the children. Explain that it is a story from the Bible and that it teaches us about courage, faith, and doing what is right.
Activity: 1. Divide the children into two groups, the Philistines and the Israelites. 2. Give each group a set of soft balls or bean bags. 3. Explain that the Philistines and the Israelites are going to have a battle, just like in the story of David and Goliath. 4. The Philistines will stand on one side of the room and the Israelites on the other. 5. The Philistines will throw their balls or bean bags at the Israelites, trying to hit them. 6. The Israelites will try to dodge the balls or bean bags and throw them back at the Philistines. 7. After a few minutes, stop the game and ask the children how they felt during the game. Did they feel scared? Did they feel brave? Did they feel like they were working together with their team? 8. Explain that in the story of David and Goliath, David was a small boy who defeated a giant because he had faith in God and was brave. He also had the help of his friends and family. 9. Ask the children how they can be like David in their own lives. How can they be brave and have faith in God? How can they work together with their friends and family to do what is right? 10. End the activity with a prayer, thanking God for the story of David and Goliath and asking for help to be brave and do what is right.
Assessment: Observe the children during the game and the discussion. Did they show an understanding of the importance of working together and doing what is right? Did they show empathy towards their teammates? Did they show an understanding of the story of David and Goliath?
