Activity: The Parable of the Sower
Desired Outcome: As I play and learn, I am developing my understanding of what is fair and unfair and the importance of caring for, sharing and cooperating with others.
Introduction: Begin by introducing the topic of Christianity and the story of Jesus talking about seeds. Explain that Jesus often used stories, called parables, to teach important lessons. Today, we will be learning about the Parable of the Sower.
Activity: 1. Gather the children in a circle and show them a picture of a seed. Ask them if they know what a seed is and what it needs to grow. 2. Read the Parable of the Sower from the Bible (Matthew 13:1-9). Explain that the story is about a farmer who went out to sow seeds in his field. 3. Divide the children into groups and give each group a small pot, soil, and seeds. Have them plant the seeds and water them. 4. While the seeds are growing, discuss the different types of soil mentioned in the parable (rocky, thorny, and good soil) and what they represent. 5. Have the children act out the different parts of the story, with one child playing the farmer and the others playing the different types of soil. 6. After the seeds have grown, have the children compare the different plants and discuss why some grew better than others. 7. Talk about the importance of caring for plants and how we can care for and share with others in our community.
Conclusion: End the activity by summarizing the lesson of the Parable of the Sower and how it relates to the desired outcome. Encourage the children to continue caring for their plants and to think about how they can care for and share with others in their daily lives.
