Activity: Zacchaeus the Small Man
Desired Outcome: As I play and learn, I am developing my understanding of what is fair and unfair and the importance of caring for, sharing and cooperating with others.
Introduction: Introduce the story of Zacchaeus the Small Man to the children. Explain that Zacchaeus was a tax collector who was disliked by many people because he took more money than he should have. However, when he met Jesus, he changed his ways and became a better person.
Activity 1: Sharing and Cooperating Divide the children into pairs and give each pair a set of building blocks. Instruct them to work together to build a tower as tall as they can. Encourage them to take turns and help each other out. Once they have finished, ask them how they felt working together and what they learned about sharing and cooperating.
Activity 2: Fair and Unfair Play a game of “Simon Says” with the children. Explain that in the game, Simon is the leader and the children have to do what he says. However, if Simon doesn’t say “Simon says” before giving an instruction, the children shouldn’t do it. This will help the children understand the concept of fair and unfair.
Activity 3: Caring for Others Provide the children with paper and crayons and ask them to draw a picture of someone they care about. Encourage them to talk about why they care about that person and what they can do to show that they care.
Conclusion: Gather the children together and ask them what they learned about sharing, cooperating, fairness, and caring for others. Remind them of the story of Zacchaeus and how he changed his ways after meeting Jesus. Encourage them to be like Zacchaeus and strive to be better people every day.
