Activity: Abraham’s Test
Desired Outcome: As I play and learn, I am developing my understanding of what is fair and unfair and the importance of caring for, sharing and cooperating with others.
Introduction: Begin by introducing the story of Abraham and his test of faith. Explain that Abraham was a faithful follower of God and was asked to sacrifice his son Isaac as a test of his faith. However, at the last moment, God provided a ram for Abraham to sacrifice instead. This story teaches us about the importance of faith and trust in God.
Activity: 1. Divide the children into small groups and provide each group with a set of building blocks. 2. Explain that each group will be given a task to build a tower using the blocks. However, each group will have different rules to follow. 3. Group 1: This group will have no rules and can build their tower however they like. 4. Group 2: This group will have to build their tower using only one hand each. 5. Group 3: This group will have to build their tower with their eyes closed. 6. After each group has completed their tower, ask them to reflect on their experience. Did they find it fair or unfair? Did they have to cooperate and share with their group members? How did they feel about the rules they had to follow? 7. Bring the groups together and discuss the similarities and differences between their experiences. Ask them to think about how this activity relates to the story of Abraham’s test. 8. Conclude by reminding the children of the importance of faith and trust in God, and how we can show care, share and cooperate with others in our daily lives.
Assessment: Observe the children during the activity and take note of their participation, cooperation, and reflection. Use this information to assess their understanding of the desired outcome.
