Title: Jesus Heals the Leprosy

Desired Outcome: As I play and learn, I am developing my understanding of what is fair and unfair and the importance of caring for, sharing and cooperating with others.

Curriculum for Excellence Experiences and Outcomes:

  • RME 0-01a: I am developing my understanding of the Christian faith through stories, celebrations, worship, symbols and actions, which inspire and influence the lives of believers.
  • HWB 0-16a: I am learning to cooperate with others and contribute to group decisions.
  • HWB 0-17a: I am learning to assess and manage risk, to protect myself and others, and to reduce the potential for harm when possible.

Introduction:

Begin by asking the children if they have ever been sick or hurt. Ask them how they felt and what they did to feel better. Explain that in the story they will hear, there was a man who was very sick and needed help.

Storytelling:

Read the story of Jesus healing the leprosy from the Bible (Luke 17:11-19). Use simple language and engage the children by asking questions and encouraging them to make connections with their own experiences.

Discussion:

After the story, ask the children how they think the leper felt when he was sick and alone. Ask them how they think he felt when Jesus healed him. Discuss the importance of caring for others and helping those in need. Ask the children if they have ever helped someone who was sick or hurt.

Activity:

Divide the children into small groups and give each group a set of building blocks. Explain that they will work together to build a house for the leper to live in after he was healed. Encourage them to share the blocks, take turns, and cooperate with each other. Remind them to be careful and not to hurt themselves or others.

Conclusion:

Gather the children together and ask each group to share their house. Discuss how they worked together and what they learned about caring for and cooperating with others. Remind them of the importance of helping those in need and being kind to others. End with a prayer thanking God for healing the leper and for giving us the ability to care for and help others.
