Activity: Samson’s Long Hair

Desired Outcome: As I play and learn, I am developing my understanding of what is fair and unfair and the importance of caring for, sharing and cooperating with others.

Curriculum Area: Religious and Moral Education

Curriculum Level: Early Level

Topic: Christianity

Introduction:

Begin the activity by introducing the story of Samson from the Bible. Explain that Samson was a strong man who had long hair that gave him his strength. However, he lost his strength when his hair was cut off by his enemies. Ask the children if they have ever had a haircut and how it made them feel.

Activity:

  1. Samson’s Haircut Game: Divide the children into two groups. One group will be Samson and the other group will be the Philistines (Samson’s enemies). The Samson group will have long strips of fabric tied around their waist to represent their long hair. The Philistines will have scissors made out of cardboard. The Philistines will try to cut off Samson’s hair while the Samson group tries to protect their hair. Switch roles after a few minutes.

  2. Sharing and Caring Activity: After the game, gather the children together and discuss how it felt to have their hair cut off. Ask them if they think it was fair for the Philistines to cut off Samson’s hair. Explain that it is important to be fair and kind to others. Have the children share a toy or snack with a friend to practice sharing and caring.

  3. Cooperative Art Activity: Provide the children with a large piece of paper and markers. Ask them to work together to create a picture of Samson with his long hair. Encourage them to take turns and cooperate with each other to create the picture.

Conclusion:

Wrap up the activity by reviewing the story of Samson and discussing the importance of fairness, sharing, and cooperation. Remind the children that it is important to treat others with kindness and respect.
