Desired Outcome: I explore ways to design and construct models.
Curriculum Area: Technologies
Curriculum Level: Early Level
Focus: Design
Introduction:
In this activity, we will be exploring the world of design by creating a model house. We will be using our creativity and imagination to come up with a unique design and then construct it using various materials.
Learning Intentions:
- To develop creativity and imagination
- To explore different materials and their properties
- To develop problem-solving skills
- To develop fine motor skills
Success Criteria:
- I can design a unique model house
- I can select appropriate materials for my model
- I can construct my model using the materials provided
- I can evaluate my model and make improvements
Resources:
- Cardboard boxes
- Paper
- Scissors
- Glue
- Markers
- Paint
- Decorative materials (e.g. stickers, beads, buttons)
Activity:
-
Begin by discussing what a house is and what it looks like. Ask the children to describe their own houses or homes.
-
Introduce the concept of design and explain that we will be designing and constructing a model house.
-
Provide the children with the resources listed above and encourage them to use their creativity and imagination to design their own unique model house.
-
Once the children have designed their model, provide them with the materials they need to construct it.
-
Encourage the children to work independently, but also to help each other if needed.
-
Once the models are complete, ask the children to evaluate their work and make any necessary improvements.
-
Display the models for everyone to see and celebrate the children’s creativity and hard work.
Assessment:
Observe the children as they work on their models and evaluate their ability to:
- Design a unique model house
- Select appropriate materials for their model
- Construct their model using the materials provided
- Evaluate their model and make improvements
Extension:
For children who finish early, encourage them to create additional models using different materials or to create a model of a different type of building (e.g. a school, a shop, a castle).
