Objective: The objective of this break-out game is to engage 8th-grade students in a fun and interactive way while teaching reading comprehension, test-taking strategies, growth mindset, and grit.
Materials Needed: 1. Printed Break-Out Game Kit (instructions, puzzles, and clues) 2. Lockable box or container 3. Combination lock(s) 4. Timer 5. Whiteboard or flipchart 6. Markers 7. Paper and pencils for students
Instructions: 1. Introduction: - Begin by introducing the concept of growth mindset and grit to the students. Explain how these qualities are essential for academic success. - Emphasize the importance of reading comprehension and test-taking strategies in achieving academic goals.
- Set-Up:
- Divide the class into small groups (4-6 students per group).
- Provide each group with a Break-Out Game Kit, which includes printed instructions, puzzles, and clues.
- Place the lockable box/container in a visible location in the classroom.
- Game Rules:
- Explain the game rules to the students:
- They must work together as a team to solve the puzzles and unlock the box within a specified time limit.
- Encourage them to use their reading comprehension skills to carefully read and analyze the instructions, puzzles, and clues.
- Remind them to apply test-taking strategies, such as eliminating incorrect options and using context clues.
- Emphasize the importance of maintaining a growth mindset and displaying grit when faced with challenges.

- Start the timer and allow the groups to begin solving the puzzles and clues.

- Completion:
- Once a group successfully unlocks the box, stop the timer and gather the whole class.
