Lesson Title: The Importance of English in Social and Health Care Professions

Level: B1

Objective: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to express reasons why they should continue learning English as part of their professional education in the social and health care sector.

Warm-up (5 minutes): 1. Begin the lesson by asking students to discuss in pairs or small groups the following question: “Why do you think English is important in the social and health care professions?” Allow a few minutes for discussion, and then ask a few pairs/groups to share their ideas with the class.

Introduction (10 minutes): 2. Present a short presentation or handout that highlights the importance of English in the social and health care professions. Include points such as: a. English as a global language in the field of healthcare and social work. b. Communication with patients, colleagues, and supervisors who may not speak the same native language. c. Access to international research, best practices, and professional development opportunities. d. Enhancing career prospects and employability in an increasingly diverse and interconnected world.

Activity (15 minutes): 3. Divide the class into small groups and provide each group with a large sheet of paper and markers. 4. Instruct the groups to brainstorm and write down as many reasons as possible why they should continue learning English as part of their professional education. Encourage them to think about both personal and professional benefits. 5. After 10 minutes, ask each group to present their ideas to the class. Encourage discussion and allow other groups to add any additional points that were missed.

Language Practice (15 minutes): 6. Provide students with a list of sentence starters related to the topic, such as: a. Learning English is important in my profession because… b. By improving my English skills, I can… c. English will help me to… d. I believe learning English will benefit me in the following ways… 7. In pairs or small groups, students should take turns completing the sentence starters using their own ideas. Encourage them to provide specific examples or personal experiences. 8. Monitor the groups and provide feedback on their language use, accuracy, and fluency.

Wrap-up (5 minutes): 9. As a class, summarize the main reasons why learning English is important in the social and health care professions. Encourage students to reflect on the activity and share any new insights or perspectives they gained. 10. Assign a short written reflection task for homework, asking students to write a paragraph about their personal motivation for continuing to learn English as part of their professional education.
