Forward Plan for Languages: Writing

Desired Outcome: Throughout the writing process, I can review and edit my writing independently to ensure that it meets its purpose and communicates meaning clearly at first reading.

Level: Fourth Level

Focus: Using the target language effectively and accurately

Term 1:

  1. Introduction to the Writing Process:
    • Introduce the writing process and its different stages: planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing.
    • Discuss the importance of reviewing and editing written work to ensure clarity and purpose.
    • Provide examples of well-edited texts in the target language.
  2. Understanding the Purpose:
    • Explore different writing purposes such as informative, persuasive, descriptive, and narrative.
    • Analyze various texts in the target language to identify their purpose and how they effectively communicate meaning.
    • Engage students in discussions and activities to practice identifying the purpose of different texts.
  3. Reviewing and Editing Techniques:
    • Teach students various reviewing and editing techniques, such as checking for coherence, clarity, grammar, and vocabulary.
    • Provide guided practice exercises where students review and edit sample texts in the target language.
    • Encourage peer editing sessions to promote collaboration and constructive feedback.

Term 2:

  1. Vocabulary and Grammar:
    • Focus on expanding students’ vocabulary and improving their grammar skills in the target language.
    • Introduce new vocabulary related to different writing genres and purposes.
    • Provide grammar exercises and activities to reinforce accurate language usage in writing.
  2. Independent Writing Practice:
    • Assign writing tasks that require students to apply the reviewing and editing techniques learned.
    • Provide clear guidelines and rubrics for each writing task, emphasizing the importance of clarity and purpose.
    • Encourage students to review and edit their work independently before submitting it.

Term 3:

  1. Peer Feedback and Reflection:
    • Organize peer feedback sessions where students exchange their written work and provide constructive feedback to their peers.
    • Teach students how to give and receive feedback effectively, focusing on specific areas of improvement.
    • Encourage students to reflect on their writing process, identifying strengths and areas for further development.
  2. Publishing and Presenting:
    • Guide students in the final stage of the writing process, which involves publishing and presenting their work.
    • Discuss different ways to present written work, such as creating digital presentations, posters, or oral presentations.
    • Provide opportunities for students to showcase their improved writing skills in the target language.

Assessment:

  • Regular formative assessments to monitor students’ progress in reviewing and editing their writing independently.
  • Summative assessments to evaluate students’ ability to meet the desired outcome, focusing on their final written pieces.
  • Provide feedback and constructive criticism to guide students’ improvement throughout the forward plan.
