Objective: To encourage students to practice their understanding of fact families.

Materials needed: - Dry erase markers - Dry erase board (or paper) - Dice

Instructions:

  1. Divide the students into groups of 4
  2. Give each group a pair of dice and a dry erase marker
  3. Tell the students that they must use the dice to create 3 different fact families
  4. Each group will start with one dice roll
  5. Challenge the students to write the 3 fact families that match their roll on the dry erase board or paper
  6. For example: If the dice roll was 4 and 2, the students would write down the three fact families 4+2=6, 2+4=6, and 6-2=4
  7. The other members of the group should check each other’s work to make sure they are correct.
  8. Once they agree, they must then roll the second dice and find 3 new fact families that match the new roll
  9. Whoever creates the most fact families in the time limit (5 minutes, for example) will be the winner.

Have fun!
