Title: “Around the World Adventure”
Objective: To help ESL students of 7th grade get to know each other and practice basic English vocabulary and conversation skills on the first day of school.
Materials: - World map or globe - Flashcards with pictures of different countries and landmarks - Small slips of paper with conversation prompts - Timer - Whiteboard or blackboard - Markers or chalk
Instructions:
- Introduction (10 minutes):
- Begin by welcoming the students to the new school year and introducing yourself.
- Explain that you will be playing a game called “Around the World Adventure” to help them get to know each other and practice English.
- Show the world map or globe and briefly discuss different countries and landmarks.
- Country Guessing Game (15 minutes):
- Show flashcards with pictures of different countries and landmarks to the students, one at a time.
- Ask the students to guess the name of the country or landmark shown on each flashcard.
- Encourage students to raise their hands and take turns guessing.
- Provide positive reinforcement and praise for correct answers.
- Conversation Challenge (20 minutes):
- Divide the students into pairs or small groups.
- Distribute slips of paper with conversation prompts to each group.
- Explain that they have a limited time to discuss the prompt and share their answers with their group members.
- Set a timer for 2-3 minutes per prompt.
- After each round, ask a few groups to share their answers with the whole class.
- Encourage students to use complete sentences and practice active listening.
Sample conversation prompts: a) What is your favorite country? Why? b) Have you ever traveled to another country? Where did you go? What did you do there? c) If you could visit any country in the world, where would you go? Why? d) What is a famous landmark in your country? Describe it. e) What do you think is interesting about different cultures?
- Classmate Bingo (15 minutes):
- Distribute a blank bingo grid (5x5) to each student.
- Ask students to write their classmates’ names in random order in the grid.
- Explain that they need to walk around the classroom and find classmates who match the descriptions in each square.
- For example, “Find someone who has a pet” or “Find someone who speaks more than one language.”
- Students should ask questions to their classmates to find the matching answers.
- The first student to complete a row or column shouts “Bingo!” and wins the game.
- Wrap-up and Reflection (5 minutes):
- Gather the students together and ask them to share one interesting thing they learned about a classmate during the game.
- Encourage students to reflect on what they enjoyed about the game and how it helped them practice English.
- Thank the students for their participation and enthusiasm.
Note: Adapt the game and prompts based on the English proficiency level of the students.
