Activity: Data Collection in Physical Education

Objective: To familiarize students with the process of collecting data during physical activities.

Materials: • Pen and paper • Stopwatch • Rope

Procedure:

  1. Explain to students what data collection is and how it applies to physical education. Explain that it is important to record data because it helps us understand and analyze our physical activities.

  2. Divide the class into two teams. Ask each group to form a single-file line and have each person stand at a designated distance from each other.

  3. Give each team an equal length of rope. Explain that as a team, they will have to collaborate in order to measure each individual’s height. Ask each person to put their hand on top of the rope and at the same time, have the team-mates holding the ends of the rope pull the rope up to their arm.

  4. Have each person count out loud while the team-mates on either side of the rope count the number of pulls. Once the rope is pulled up to their arm, record the number of pulls in the data table.

  5. Ask each team to measure the height of one person at a time. After this process is complete, repeat the process again with the other team.

  6. Once all teams have completed the task, collect the data from the two teams and discuss the results as a class.

Conclusion:

Discuss the importance of data collection and how analyzing data can help physical education instructors to get the most out of their lesson plans. Ask students to think about other ways they can collect data from physical activities.
