Objective: At the end of the lesson, students will understand the concept of quality in engineering and be able to explain why quality is important in engineering.
Materials: - Whiteboard - Markers - Whiteboard eraser - Quality and Engineering related handouts
Lesson: I. Introduction- A. Explain why quality is important (5 minutes) 1. Quality is important in engineering because it helps to ensure that any device, system or product created is built to the specified level of tolerances and precision. 2. Quality also ensures that the device, system or product will work as intended and meet the expectations of the customer.
B. Set expectations for the lesson (3 minutes) 1. Outline the structure of the lesson and the main topics that will be discussed 2. Explain the activities that the students will complete 3. Ask any questions the students might have
II. Quality concepts in engineering (30 minutes) A. Define quality in engineering (10 minutes) 1. Explain the concept of quality in the context of engineering. 2. Discuss the various factors that are important when considering quality in engineering
B. Quality in engineering processes (10 minutes) 1. Explain how quality is considered in engineering processes, such as design, production, and testing. 2. Discuss the various ways that quality is addressed, such as inspections, quality management systems, and certifications.
C. Quality in engineering products (10 minutes) 1. Explain how quality is important in engineering products. 2. Discuss the various ways that quality is addressed in engineering products, such as materials selection, tolerances, and testing.
III. Activity (15 minutes): A. Divide the students into small groups B. Give each group one of the handouts C. Ask the students to discuss the handout and come up with a list of the key points D. Have the students share their list of key points with the rest of the class
IV. Discussion (15 minutes): A. Ask the students to discuss the concepts they learned in the lesson B. Discuss any questions or concerns the students may have
V. Conclusion (5 minutes): A. Summarize the key points of the lesson B. Highlight the importance of quality in engineering C. Thank the students for their participation
Evaluation: At the end of the lesson, ask the students to complete a short quiz to evaluate their understanding of quality in engineering.
