Objective: To use powerful adjectives, prepositions and adjectives to describe a magical woodland realm

Materials: Paper and colored pencils for each student, computer for research

Hook: Show slides of different magical wooded realms, have questions ready for the students to answer and discuss after viewing the slides.

Instructions:

  1. Discuss the magical wooded realms displayed in the slides and ask students questions about them to encourage thinking about adjectives that can be used to describe the setting.

  2. Have students turn to a partner and brainstorm more adjectives, prepositions and nouns that can be used to describe the setting of a magical woodland realm.

  3. Ask students to create their own magical woodland realm and jot down their ideas.

  4. Ask students to use their imagination and use the adjectives, prepositions and nouns they brainstormed to create a detailed description of their magical woodland realm.

  5. Once students have finished their descriptions, remind them to use powerful adjectives, prepositions and nouns to enhance their descriptions.

  6. Once descriptions are complete, have students take turns reading aloud their descriptions and displaying their artwork.

Closure: Remind students of the importance of using powerful adjectives, prepositions and nouns when describing a setting. Have a class discussion about the different ways these type of words can add impact to writing.
