Objective: For kindergarteners to recognize 10 sight words (can, do, see, like, the, I, a, he, to, and she)

Materials: 10 attached lesson cards with sight words (can, do, see, like, the, I, a, he, to, and she), Power Rangers figurines or pictures (optional)

Procedure:

  1. Begin the lesson by introducing the concept of sight words. Explain that sight words are words that can’t be sounded out. Show the kindergarteners the 10 sight words on the cards you’ve provided.

  2. Explain how the Power Rangers use their special power to be strong and brave and how they will help the kindergarteners strengthen their sight word skills.

  3. Read each sight word aloud and have the kindergarteners repeat it back. If you’re using the Power Rangers figurines or pictures, have each Ranger read one of the words.

  4. Have the kindergarteners trace the words with their fingers and say them aloud.

  5. Ask the kindergarteners to use the words in sentences. For example, have them say “I can do it”, “He likes to see the Power Rangers”, and “She likes it a lot”.

  6. For a fun way to review the words, have the kindergarteners act out each word or sound out the letters to the word.

  7. At the end of the lesson, ask the kindergarteners to name the 10 sight words and review them one last time.

Closure: Review the 10 sight words and thank the kindergarteners for their participation. Remind them that sight words are an important part of learning to read, and that the Power Rangers will help them become strong and brave readers.
