Objective: At the end of the lesson, learners will be able to read and comprehend a French passage using the science of reading.
Materials: - French passage - Magnetic letters or alphabet cards
Warm Up Activity: Start by stretching out the French pronunciation of each letter as a class.
Phonological Awareness Activity: Using the magnetic letters or alphabet cards, review each letter with the students and allow them to come up with words beginning with each sound. Focus on the individual sounds within each word.
Passage: For the reading comprehension activity, use the following passage:
“Les enfants sont contents d’aller à l’école. Ils rient et jouent avec leurs amis à l’école. Ils apprennent à lire et à écrire. Les enfants adorent l’école !”
Sound Work Activity: Using the passage above, focus on specific sounds within the words. Ask the students to sound out specific words or individual sounds within the words and give them time to practice reading aloud. Explain that as they read, they should count and/or mark the number of syllables in each word.
Application: Once they have mastered the sounds in the passage, have the students use the passage to complete a worksheet, covering the details of the passage. Smiley faces can be added if they need another incentive.
Review: Ask the students questions about the passage, reinforcing the key aspects of the text. Encourage the students to practice reading the passage aloud individually or in small groups.
Closure: At the end of the lesson, have a discussion with the class about their comprehension of the passage and what they learned.
Assessment: Evaluate the students based on their participation and comprehension of the passage.
