Objective: At the end of the lesson, students will be able to comprehend passages in French using the science of reading.
Materials: - Sample French passage - Chart of science of reading elements - Whiteboard - Dry erase markers
Lesson:
-
Begin by introducing the concept of reading comprehension. Explain to the students that reading comprehension is about understanding the ideas and information in the passages that they read.
-
Ask the students what are some strategies they use when reading a passage to help them better understand it. Discuss and chart those strategies on the whiteboard. (Example strategies: re-read, use context clues, make predictions, etc.)
-
Then, introduce the science of reading. Explain what it is and how it can help students comprehend passages. Show the chart of the science of reading elements and discuss them with the students. (Example elements: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, etc.)
-
Read a sample French passage aloud to the students. After doing that, discuss the science of reading elements that occurred in the passage. (Example: certain words in the passage had certain phonemes that students need to be able to recognize).
-
Have students work in pairs or groups to re-read the same passage. While they are re-reading it, they should discuss the science of reading elements they are noticing.
-
Ask the students to go over the strategies they discussed earlier. Encourage them to use any strategies they think will help them better understand the passage.
-
Give the students an opportunity to answer questions about the passage. Help them out as needed and discuss their responses.
-
End the lesson with a meaningful discussion about how the science of reading can help them comprehend passages in French and other languages.
