Topic: Measuring and Estimating Length Learning Outcomes: 1. Understand common units of length 2. Understand the process of measuring and estimating length 3. Begin to estimate and measure length
Introduction (5 minutes): Begin the lesson by introducing the key term ‘length’ to the class. Ask if they have any examples of length in their daily lives (e.g. a football pitch, the distance between their house and school). Introduce common units of length – metres, centimetres, millimetres, kilometres. Discuss the differences between them. Ask the students to demonstrate an approximation of the different lengths with their hands (e.g. open hand for 1m, clasped thumb to middle finger for 1cm).
Active Activity 1 (10 minutes): Split the students into pairs and give each of them a ruler. Ask them to measure common objects in the classroom (e.g. the whiteboard, desks, windows). Monitor the class and ask questions as they work to help guide them (e.g. How long is the window? How many centimetres is that?).
Active Activity 2 (10 minutes): Give each student some measuring tape. Ask them to measure the width of their desks and record their answer on mini whiteboards. Once they have measured, ask them to record the length in centimetres, metres, and kilometres.
Plenary (5 minutes): Ask the class questions such as “What do you understand by the term “length”?” What are the common types of length?” and “How do you measure and estimate length?” Use the answers to summarise the lesson’s key points.
