Lesson Title: Tasting Sandwich Fillings

Grade Level: 3-5

Objective: Students will be able to identify and describe different sandwich fillings through taste testing.

Materials: - A variety of sandwich fillings (e.g. peanut butter, jelly, ham, turkey, cheese, lettuce, tomato, cucumber, etc.) - Bread slices - Plates - Napkins - Water cups

Procedure:

  1. Begin by discussing with the students the different types of sandwich fillings they have tried before. Ask them to name some of their favorites and why they like them.

  2. Introduce the different sandwich fillings that will be tasted in the lesson. Show the students each filling and explain what it is and how it is commonly used in sandwiches.

  3. Have the students wash their hands and distribute the bread slices and plates.

  4. Place a small amount of each filling on a plate and label it with a sticky note.

  5. Have the students take turns tasting each filling and describing what they taste. Encourage them to use descriptive words such as sweet, salty, crunchy, smooth, etc.

  6. After each student has tasted all of the fillings, have a class discussion about their favorite and least favorite fillings. Ask them to explain why they liked or disliked certain fillings.

  7. As a class, create a chart or graph to display the results of the taste test.

  8. Finally, have the students make their own sandwiches using their favorite fillings. Encourage them to be creative and try new combinations.

Assessment: Observe the students during the taste test and class discussion to assess their ability to identify and describe different sandwich fillings. Additionally, assess their creativity and willingness to try new combinations when making their own sandwiches.

Extension: Have the students research different types of sandwiches from around the world and present their findings to the class. Alternatively, have them create their own unique sandwich recipe and present it to the class.
