Objective: After the completion of the lesson, students will be able to identify components of a balanced diet and understand the importance of incorporating a wide variety of foods into their daily diet.

Materials: Charts or diagrams illustrating components of a balanced diet

Procedure:

  1. Begin the lesson by asking the students what they know about what constitutes a balanced diet.

  2. After the students share their responses, explain that a balanced diet is composed of a variety of different food groups, including proteins, carbohydrates, dairy, fruits, and vegetables.

  3. Create a chart or diagram illustrating the components of a balanced diet, and have the students look at the visual to help determine what foods belong in each group.

  4. Discuss the recommended number of servings of each food group adults should consume each day, and the consequences of not consuming the recommended amounts.

  5. Ask the students to discuss the importance of balanced diet, and the importance of the body getting its proper nutrients in order to remain healthy.

  6. Give each student a piece of paper and have them create a meal plan outlining what types of food they could eat each day in order to get the proper nutrition.

Conclusion: Summarize the lesson and make sure students understand the importance of eating a balanced diet. Ask the students to discuss how they can incorporate a variety of foods groups into their meals each day.
