Lesson Plan: First Impressions at Work
Level: Upper-Intermediate
Objective: To teach students about the importance of first impressions at work and to provide them with the necessary vocabulary to describe and discuss this topic.
Time: 60 minutes

Procedure:

Warm-up (5 minutes): Ask students to discuss in pairs or small groups about their first day at work. What was their experience like? Did they feel nervous or confident? Did they make a good first impression? Encourage them to share their stories with the class.

Presentation (15 minutes): Introduce the topic of first impressions at work and explain why it is important. Use the vocabulary words to describe the different aspects of first impressions, such as attire, body language, handshake, eye contact, communication skills, etiquette, courtesy, and respect. Provide examples of good and bad first impressions.

Practice (25 minutes): Divide the class into pairs or small groups and give them a scenario where they have to make a good first impression at work. For example, they could be meeting a new boss, a client, or a colleague. Ask them to discuss what they would wear, how they would greet the person, what they would say, and how they would behave. Encourage them to use the vocabulary words in their discussion.

Feedback (10 minutes): Ask each group to share their ideas with the class and provide feedback. Encourage the class to ask questions and give suggestions.

Wrap-up (5 minutes): Summarize the key points of the lesson and ask the class to reflect on what they have learned. Ask them to share one thing they will do differently to make a good first impression at work.
Homework: Ask students to write a short paragraph about their experience of making a good or bad first impression at work. Encourage them to use the vocabulary words in their writing.
