Lesson Plan Objective: To teach children about rhythm and pitch. Materials Needed: Mini drums, drums sticks, CD player, CD with nursery rhymes

Time Frame: 45 minutes

Step 1 (5 minutes): Introduction – Introduce and explain the concepts of rhythm and pitch to the children. Explain that this lesson will involve them and their instruments building rhythms together and that they will learn to hear the changes in pitch.

Step 2 (10 minutes): Listen and Identify – Ask the children to listen to the CD playing the nursery rhymes. Have them label the differences in both rhythm and pitch as they are heard from the CD.

Step 3 (10 minutes): Create – Now it’s time for the children to create. Give each child their own mini drum with sticks and have them practice playing their beat and mixing it with the music from the CD. Encourage them to play louder, softer, faster, and slower.

Step 4 (10 minutes): Imitate – Now the children will try and replicate the rhythm and pitch they heard originally. Have them practice playing off each other, or by repeating what was originally heard.

Step 5 (10 minutes): Performance - Finally, have the children perform their creations. Encourage them to clap, stomp and sing along.

Step 6 (5 minutes): Reflection - Ask the children to discuss what they learned or think about what they heard and created. Encourage them to point out the similarities and differences amongst the beats.
