Title: Rounding Numbers to the Nearest 10 or 100
Grade Level: 3rd Grade
Objective: - Students will understand the concept of rounding two- and three-digit whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100. - Students will be able to apply their understanding of place value to round numbers accurately.
Materials: - Whiteboard or chart paper - Markers or chalk - Place value charts - Number cards (two- and three-digit numbers) - Rounding worksheets - Pencils
Procedure:
-
Introduction (5 minutes): - Begin the lesson by reviewing the concept of place value with the students. - Ask students to recall the value of each digit in a two- or three-digit number (e.g., hundreds, tens, ones). - Explain that today, they will learn how to round numbers to the nearest 10 or 100 using their place value understanding.
-
Whole Group Instruction (10 minutes): - Write a two-digit number on the board (e.g., 56) and ask students to identify the place value of each digit. - Explain that when rounding to the nearest 10, they need to look at the digit in the ones place. - If the digit is 0-4, they round down to the nearest 10. If the digit is 5-9, they round up to the nearest 10. - Model the rounding process by rounding the number on the board to the nearest 10. - Repeat the process with a few more examples, involving student participation.
-
Guided Practice (15 minutes): - Distribute place value charts and number cards to each student. - Instruct students to work in pairs or small groups. - Provide a set of number cards (two- and three-digit numbers) to each group. - Ask students to select a number card and round it to the nearest 10, using their place value charts. - Circulate the room, providing assistance and checking for understanding. - After a few rounds, have students switch roles within their groups.
-
Independent Practice (15 minutes): - Distribute rounding worksheets to each student. - Instruct students to complete the worksheet independently, rounding the given numbers to the nearest 10 or 100. - Encourage students to use their place value charts and the rounding rules discussed earlier. - Monitor the students’ progress and provide individual support as needed.
-
Closure (5 minutes): - Gather the students back together as a whole group. - Review the rounding rules for both rounding to the nearest 10 and 100. - Ask a few students to share their answers from the independent practice. - Summarize the lesson by emphasizing the importance of place value understanding in rounding numbers accurately.
Assessment: - Monitor students’ participation during whole group instruction and guided practice. - Review students’ completed worksheets to assess their understanding of rounding two- and three-digit numbers to the nearest 10 or 100. - Provide additional practice or reteaching for students who may need it.
