LESSON PLAN:

Objective: At the end of the lesson, 9th grade students will be able to explain the major aspects of the Cuban Missile Crisis, provide an overview of the U.S.-Cuban relations leading up to and during the crisis, and identify the repercussion of important events in U.S.-Cuban relations such as the Bay of Pigs, Platt Amendment and Spanish-American War.

Materials Needed: - Overhead projector - Teacher laptop - Classroom computer with internet connection - Student laptops - World map

Time: 90 minutes

Activity:

I. Introduction (10 minutes) A. Define Cuban Missile Crisis B. Give basic facts

II. Discussion of US-Cuba Relations Leading Up to crisis (25 minutes) A. Overview history of US-Cuba relations leading up to crisis B. Discuss Bay of Pigs C. Discuss Platt Amendment D. Discuss Spanish-American War

III. Discussion of Cuban Missile Crisis (25 minutes) A. Overview of crisis B. Role of Soviet Union, Cuba and US during crisis

IV. Conclusion (10 minutes) A. Summary of major facts B. Recap the importance of US-Cuba relations and the role it played in Cuban Missile Crisis

V. Assessment (20 minutes) A. Have students create a timeline that displays the events of US-Cuba relations leading up to and during the Cuban Missile Crisis B. Divide students into two teams and have them explain the different sides of the crisis and the US-Cuban relations C. Have students answer the following questions on a worksheet: 1. What was the purpose of the Platt Amendment? 2. Why was the Spanish-American War Significant? 3. Describe the role of the US in the Bay of Pigs. 4. How did the US and Soviet Union respond to the Cuban Missile Crisis?

VI. Wrap Up (5 minutes) A. Answer any questions or have discussion about the assessment B. Dismiss students

Homework: Have students research more about Cuban Missile Crisis and create a poster summarizing the main ideas.
