Introduction:

Today we’re going to be learning about proper nouns. Proper nouns are names of people, places, or things that always start with a capital letter. Does anyone have an example of a proper noun they can share with the class? (Allow class to answer then give an example such as: Mary, London, Australia, etc).

Lesson Outline:

  1. Introduce the definition of a proper noun.

  2. Explain what capital letter means in a sentence and which words should always be capitalized (e.g. names of people, places, titles of books and movies, etc).

  3. Use an example of a sentence and ask the students to identify which words should be capitalized.

  4. Watch a simple video explaining proper nouns https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kx08hDfm6OE

  5. Complete a worksheet on proper nouns. Here’s an example: https://www.teachstarter.com/au/worksheets/proper-nouns-1/

Questioning:

During the lesson, ask questions related to the definitions and use of proper nouns. For instance, ask the students to explain what a proper noun is, to identify which words in a sentence should be capitalized, and to give an example of a proper noun.

Assessment:

The assessment can be done through the worksheet. Ask the student to circle which words are proper nouns and write the proper noun on the line provided.

Differentiation:

Provide guidance to students who may need help in completing the worksheet. This could include further explanation of the topic and helping them understand which words are to be capitalized.

Plenary:

Ask the students to come up with a sentence to practice using proper nouns correctly. Have the students share their sentences with the class and encourage them to explain why each word is a proper noun.
