Introduction:

To begin the lesson, students will be asked to discuss in small groups their experiences travelling around their country and what means of transport they typically use (10 minutes). The teacher then collects different suggestions around the room before introducing the topic of the lesson (5 minutes).

Lesson Outline:

The teacher will then explain the different modes of transport: air, rail, road, sea and inland waterways (10 minutes). For an added interactive element, the teacher can ask the class to think of the two most common means of transport they might use and create a graphical representation of their choices (10 minutes). The teacher can then introduce students to the following resources to help with their learning:

-Video: “Types of Transport” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5jKkDCiQKo)

-Online quiz: “Means of Transport” (https://www.kids-quiz.co.uk/means-of-transport-quiz)

-Game: “Transport Connections” (https://www.primaryresources.co.uk/online/transportconnections.swf)

-Worksheet: “Modes of Transport” (https://worksheets.theteacherscorner.net/make-your-own/transportation/transportation1.pdf)

Next, the students will work in pairs to attend to the task on the worksheet which involves matching the different modes of transport with their appropriate definitions (20 minutes).

Questioning and Assessment:

The class will then go through the answers together and the teacher will ask them to explain the different definitions presented on the worksheet (15 minutes). The teacher makes sure to ask a variety of questions to check the students’ understanding of the content. To assess the results, the teacher can set a self-assessment activity by giving the students a number of transport-related scenarios and ask them which means of transport would be most suitable (5 minutes).

Differentiation and Plenary:

To differentiate instruction, the teacher can create a more challenging task (eg. analysing the advantages and disadvantages of using each mode of transport) for more-able pupils. To finish, the teacher invites the students to reflect in writing on the different means of transport using what they have learnt in this lesson and provide glimpses of one’s own opinion (5 minutes). ad ibig sheffield
